2021 Yearly Horoscopes: Overview

2020 will go down in history as the year the world changed due to Covid-19. Hot on the heels of 2020 and its startling astrological aspects, the astrology of the year 2021 is characterized by an ongoing conflict between the status quo versus progressive reform.   As we struggle to put our societies back together again, we may struggle to know which way to choose. Do we rebuild what was there before? Or do we try something entirely new?   A rare Saturn-Uranus square, last experienced in 1999-2000, becomes exact three times, in February, June and December. Each time, Saturn in Aquarius urges us to stick with what we know, while Uranus in Taurus demands full- scale structural change. Geo-politically, as well as personally, events in February, June and December are likely to reverberate for longer than we will be able to foresee at the time.   Another striking factor for the year 2021 is Jupiter’s brief transit through Pisces from mid-May to late July, in retrograde motion for the second half of that period. Jupiter in Aquarius has focused us relentlessly on social reform, group goals and the necessary ‘we’re all in this together’ view of a society facing a global crisis.   When Jupiter shifts into Pisces, however, we may start to understand how an intuitive and heart-centered, compassionate view is necessary if we’re going to recover our health, our economies, and our own disrupted lives. When Jupiter returns, retrograde to Aquarius, we may have to retrace some of 2020’s steps for a while.   Indeed, this retracing of steps and recognition that ‘we’ve been here before’ is a key theme for the year. We know what the status quo feels like, with all of its benefits and all of its faults – so the three Saturn-Uranus squares present us with difficult choices and a potential fear of the unknown.   There are four eclipses in 2021, the first two and last of which occur across the Gemini-Sagittarius axis. The Lunar Eclipse in late May in Sagittarius and the Solar Eclipse in early June in Gemini reflect the interplay between ‘truth’ or wisdom and fast facts, and reminds us that no amount of news-twisting, fake news, media manipulation or hyperbole can obscure the essential truths of life.   There’s a balance needed here too between teaching and learning; it’s important to understand that we can all be teachers, but we must also all be learners. Nobody holds a monopoly on wisdom, especially not while we’re all re- learning “normality”. Events around this eclipse may highlight the problems that can occur if we believe everything we read in the media, or, conversely, if the media is too tightly controlled and press freedom is curtailed.   The Lunar Eclipse in Taurus in late November is the first Lunar Eclipse in that zodiac sign since 2004 and begins a new cycle of eclipses on the Taurus- Scorpio axis which will continue through 2022. Here, the lessons are around our practical everyday needs such as safe food, water and shelter, versus our sometimes-obsessive pursuit of more abstract desires.   It’s about getting priorities clear. No amount of navel-gazing will fix hunger, disease, poverty or environmental damage, so this eclipse highlights the need for practical, on the ground action. Shocks and surprises around this time may show us more of the consequences we can expect if we allow large parts of the world to live in misery, pollution or corruption.   It is perhaps not until Jupiter returns to Pisces, in the last few days of the year, that we will sense some light at the end of the tunnel. It’s likely that the year 2021 starts to fade a sense of idealism will prevail, together with perhaps a strengthening of compassion and goodwill towards our fellow earth inhabitants.   A belief in goodness and a trust in each other can be very healing, but Jupiter is as ever prone to excess, so this shift of zodiac sign could also, longer term, lead to a religious uprising of some kind which would undermine the widespread idealism preceding it. Indeed, the Solar Eclipse in early December in Sagittarius reminds us that ideology and zealotry can still be dangerous while the world remains in uncertain times.
