Alex Gilbert: Living with the label of ADHD

Women & ADHD - A podcast by Katy Weber - Mondays

Categories:

Episode 68 with Alex Gilbert. "The most important thing, whether you’re officially diagnosed or not, is advocating for yourself." Alex was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD at the age of 8. She also knew by the age of 16 that she wanted to go into business for herself and help others who might have been struggling with learning disabilities and/or ADHD. After spending years working in leadership development, she has finally pursued her dream and now runs a consulting and coaching business that helps other adults with learning disabilities who have been struggling in their careers.  Alex helps others navigate their day-to-day workloads so that they feel supported and are able to reach their highest potential, and she offers free 30-min Declutter Your Mind sessions. Her biggest goal in creating Cape-Able Consulting is to change the stigma surrounding learning disabilities and ADHD by reminding people how “cape-able” they are. We talk about her early diagnosis and some of the stigmas and stereotypes she encountered while having the label of a learning disability, and how that impacted her education journey as well as her perception of herself. We also discuss advocating for yourself in the workplace, whether and when to disclose a learning disability, and why there has been such a recent increase in adult diagnoses of ADHD.
