Joan Halifax: The Liturgy of Taking Nothing for Granted (Spring Practice Period 2022)

Upaya Zen Center's Dharma Podcast - A podcast by Joan Halifax | Zen Buddhist Teacher Upaya Abbot - Sundays

Everything is given to us. This life, this body, the breakfast we ate this morning, the technology that allows us to listen to this talk, and even the great difficulties we encounter throughout our lives, including death itself, are given to us.  And every day, every moment, in fact, we have the opportunity to care for what we’ve been given or to ignore it and take it for granted. Roshi Joan Halifax talks about how the practice of Zen liturgy can help us to appreciate the gift of this life and can increase our sensitivity to each and our shared planet. In the spirit of her teacher Roshi Bernie Glassman, Roshi Joan describes Zen liturgy as an enacted recognition of our being One Body; or in the spirit of another of Roshi Joan’s teachers, Thich Nhat Hanh, Zen liturgy is an art of Interbeing. And once we have a sense of that, we may ask ourselves, what if we treated our everyday lives as liturgies? And what if every step, every greeting, every gesture, was itself part of this liturgy of gratitude? To access the resources page for this program, please sign up by clicking here.
