Where he studied Sociology and Psychology and he later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. He then began his career in law enforcement in 1977. When he was hired as a Deputy Sheriff by the Webb County Sheriff’s office in Laredo. Javier would dedicate seven years of his life there. Peña began working for the DEA in 1984 where he was assigned as a special agent for the Austin, Texas office, where he worked until 1988. By 1988, the international cocaine trade had begun to explode, and Peña then volunteered for a new post in Bogota, Colombia. He was sent there along with agent Stephen Murphy. It was there that he participated in the successful manhunt for narcotics kingpin Pablo Escobar. The infamous DEA duo then began unearthing many secrets about how Pablo and the Medellin Cartel really operated. Pena, Murphy, and the Colombian National Police (CNP) then later teamed up to put an end to Escobar’s illegal activities. Javier Pena is now re-living his story through Netflix and Narcos. Two series of the Narcos series chronicle the extraordinary rise as well as the ignominious death of the world's most notorious narcoterrorist.
