Tonda decided to take the winnings as an annuity rather than a lump sum. Her co-workers sued her saying they had a verbal agreement to split any winnings, but Tonda won the case. However, the legal issues and stress led to divorce from her husband. The IRS then said she owed $2 million in gift taxes for giving money to family. After legal fees and splitting the annuity in the divorce, Tonda was only getting around $90k annually and owed the IRS. She got a job as a casino dealer in Biloxi to make ends meet. Her ex-husband kidnapped her to try to get lottery money but she shot him in self-defense. The lottery win ruined Tonda's life through legal troubles and greed from others. She now lives quietly, a far cry from the multi-millionaire she could have been with better financial planning.
