Originally from Ireland, Baptiste moved to Salt Lake City where he got a job as a gravedigger. In 1862, he was caught robbing the grave of a notorious outlaw and exiled to a deserted island in the Great Salt Lake. The island owners would check on him every few weeks. After finding one of their cows slaughtered, they realized Baptiste had escaped, likely by building a makeshift boat. This sparked a massive manhunt, but Baptiste was never found. Some believe he made it to Montana to live as a miner, while others think he drowned in the lake. In 2010, his body was finally located and exhumed.
