For the first time, students taking an academic break over the summer can attend an esports camp that positions them for college recruitment and scholarship opportunities. Virtual Reload, an esports and tournament training center located in Mauldin and operates online, is hosting a virtual summer camp for students.The summer camp will begin June 7-11 with Minecraft Factions and Rocket League. A second program will start July 12-16 with Minecraft Factions and Super Smash Bros Ultimate.From both week-long esports camps, students will learn shoutcasting, tournament organization, livestream and production, graphic design, cybersecurity and mindfulness. College recruiters will scout participants in a combine-style event to increase their exposure to college esports teams.“Your child could get college scholarships for playing video games,” said Ron Hamlin, owner of Virtual Reload. “A growing number of colleges regionally and across the nation are entering the field, awarding scholarships for skilled gameplay.”  Each camp session will end with a tournament. Proceeds from sponsorships will benefit tournament winners at the summer camp week’s end - an undetermined amount to be announced toward the start of camp.“Esports are very competitive, transcending a ‘trend’ to become one of the fastest-growing activities in the country,” Hamlin said. At least 14 post-secondary institutions from Upstate South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia are offering scholarships for skilled esports play. According to The National Association of Collegiate Esports, currently, 195 colleges and universities nationwide offer esports scholarships.With Virtual Reload’s camp, the program is available virtually and in person.Wired Minds Tutoring runs a variety of camp programs for children ages 9 up to 17. Those programs include cooking, coding and math.The program hosts about 40 campers in person each year. This year’s hybrid program allows for even more campers to participate virtually.Virtual Reload is an esports coaching company located near Greenville, South Carolina, with a presence globally across digital media platforms.
