Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931) is the author of the classic “The Prophet” and is bestselling American poet of the 20th century. He’s honored in Arabic literature as one of the greats of their Romantic era. However, in America his critical reception has been much more mixed. While the public loves his work, critics celebrate him far less than his contemporaries, such as Robert Frost. But no one cares what elitist critics think. Beauty is a right, like air, water, and freedom of speech. Our tastes matter. In this poem of paradoxes, Gibran discovers the joy in defeat, the flaws of victory, and his own potential for triumph, hiding in the unlikeliest of places. May his masculine vision of the noble pursuit of purpose inspire us all.
