Julia's unplanned homebirth to Remy in their 'cave' environment
The Positive Births NZ podcast - A podcast by Helen Bartrom

“We love our birth story” says Julia as she describes her feelings about her first birth to Remy. This is one of those special stories, a birth that was planned to be somewhere else, but ended up progressing so quickly that it became an unplanned homebirth, with a midwife they had never met before. But this midwife brought with her the perfect energy that fitted perfectly with Julia and Ryan and Julia shares how she was like an angel and so encouraging with empowering words of affirmation that was just right for her at the time. Julia tells us about their birth cave that they had created – with special lighting which really enhanced the mood and she shares how the environment and the atmosphere became so important -they also had baby in the middle of a storm too which only added to the experience. Despite the storm raging outside, Julia says she felt grounded and calm the whole way through even when things got tough with some shaking, vomiting and membranes releasing at the same time. When thinking back on her birth journey she is most proud of how she and Ryan worked together as a duo, the perfect team, as it was really only them for their 3rd trimester as well as the majority of the birth and for the postnatal time as lockdown prevented them from sharing any of these moments with family and friends. They had the ability to ground themselves when things got difficult and you’ll hear about what happened when Julia hit the 41 week mark. For anyone pregnant right now, it could be worth while listening to this episode simply to prepare for a potentially similar experience if you get to week 41, not to say that Julia’s experience would be the same for everyone, but it could be something to be mentally and emotionally prepared for. This episode is definitely one to put onto 'must listen to' list. If you too would like to prepare for a positive birth, see www.positivebirths.co.nz
