Dione's two homebirths

The Positive Births NZ podcast - A podcast by Helen Bartrom

Midwife Dione was super excited for her births and both of her labours were similar. In both situations her membranes released as her first sign of labour and then there was a bit of stop start stop start before things really got going. Dione tells us about how she chose the ‘dream team’ midwives to support her, she and husband Nick had total faith in them and how easy it was for her to switch off her analytical midwife mind and just be a birthing mum, tune into her body, get into the zone and to know that within herself everything is all ok. She also tells us in her first birth with Sienna how she waited for baby to descend right down after she reached 10cm and didn’t start pushing too early. This just allowed the time for baby to get ready and make a passive descent and then she came out into the world. Second birth with Harvey was similar, although quicker, once the membranes fully released it was all go and even though it was fast Dione was able to get into the right headspace. They’d been so happy with the set up for Sienna's birth that they did the same thing again. Dione's biggest piece of advice to herself and all mums out there is: "trust your gut and your intuition" and is such an important piece of advice that seems to be coming up from a lot of mums time and time again. As discussed her project with pregnancy and birth (and midwife thankyous) gift baskets are found at www.dreamdesigns.co.nz
