Simon McDowell: Fertility expert says changes to surrogacy laws have taken a long time to get underway

The Mike Hosking Breakfast - A podcast by Newstalk ZB - Tuesdays

Surrogacy laws are set to be updated to move with the times. Currently, parents have to adopt their child using adoption laws, which are 70 years old. The changes remove the need for parents to adopt their child born by surrogacy, establish a register for babies and provide clarity over payments surrogates receive from parents. Wellington Fertility Associates Medical Director Simon McDowell told Mike Hosking it's taken a long time to get this process underway. "Like many of our laws, they were set up perhaps with good intentions but the system to get the law changed is quite onerous and it's been on the back burner."
