Since 2019, New Zealand's litter problem has only gotten worse. The 2022 National Litter Audit found a 72 percent increase in plastic since 2019. While construction waste, when totalled nationally, was the largest contributor to litter weight overall. However, there was a drop in the number of cigarette butts found.
