Exercise Is Not Optional

The CDC recommends 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity AND 2 days of muscle strengthening activity. And this would be a MINIMUM - if you want optimal health, I’d even say 3-5 days of strength training is where it should be.That is at least 30 minutes per day - and that is not walking. Walking is great, it gets us moving, it helps aerobic capacity, but it is NOT. THE. SAME. Muscle is an endocrine organ, which impacts our hormones, and is one of the main areas of use for our energy consumption. When you are training and moving you get the benefit of your muscle for the disposal of the energy we consume. Muscle contraction ensures that the metabolites and our energy sources (i.e. fats and carbs) are turning over quicker and are not being stored. Otherwise, fat and glucose can both be stored in muscle.  The more muscle you have, the more our body is able to turn over energy stores efficiently and quickly i.e. We are not storing our energy in additional fat cells or burdening our liver with trying to process it.When we don’t work our muscles, they become less healthy tissue. They can start to foster a more inflammatory environment within the body.
