Grace for Sinners

In the middle of the description of building the temple, God comes to Solomon to say that while no temple could contain him, he has chosen to dwell among the people of Israel and not forsake them. This is amazing because the history of Israel and of human beings in general, is a history of us forsaking God. How can this be possible?
