The family was living in Columbus, GA, when Rue’s mom, Katherine, went in for a routine anatomy scan. During the scan, it was suggested that she visit CHOA for an additional scan. There she was told that what they were seeing on the scan was too complicated for their team and referred to Boston Children’s Hospital. Katherine traveled to Boston for an additional ultrasound and possible fetal surgery. The team at Boston Children’s Hospital informed Katherine that Rue’s condition was too complex for fetal surgery and instead recommend that she deliver there so she could go into surgery immediately. She spent nearly her first two years of life in the hospital, and the family lived in Boston for Rue’s first 4 years of life so that she could have the best access to care.
