The girl in this story is a very kind and helpful girl who loses her spindle down the well. Her step-mother is very angry at her and tells her not to come back until she has found the spindle. She goes into the well and comes out on a road. She passes an over and an apple tree and helps them as she makes her way to a small cottage. When she arrives at the cottage she stays and helps the woman inside and after a while gets her spindle and returns home after being rewarded for her help. The step-mother sees how well the girl has done and sends her own daughter into the well to be rewarded as well but things do not work out as well for the second girl who is not as kind or helpful.
