This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient philosopher and statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero's work, On Duties (De Officiis), which presents a largely Stoic view on ethics, virtues, relationships, and duties or moral obligations Specifically it examines his short discussion about how faction or partisan divisions arise within a society. Generally, this takes place because those involved in government give priority to their own individual good or the good of a part of the community, over the common good. Cicero also discusses "electioneering" - a common practice in the century leading up to the fall of the Roman Republic - and how it can be problematic. He sets out rules for how a person ought to engage their political rivals and opponents - treating them as common members of their shared society, rather than as enemies.
