Augustine Of Hippo, City Of God Book 19 - Philosophical Sects And The Supreme Good

Sadler's Lectures - A podcast by Lectures on classic and contemporary philosophical texts and thinkers by Gregory B. Sadler

Categories:

This lecture discusses key ideas from the early medieval philosopher and theologian, Augustine of Hippo's work, The City of God. It focuses specifically on his discussion at the beginning of book 19, setting out a vast number of philosophical "sects", based on a variety of distinctions. This classification is taken from Marcus Varro's now-lost work, De Philosophia, and has to do with what each sect thinks human beings desire, how they vide virtue, whether they adopt stances from Academic skepticism or Cynicism, what type of life they adopt, and so on.
