In a historic development overnight, a cardinal from the United States has become the 267th pontiff. Robert Francis Prevost, 69, will now take the name Pope Leo XIV. The cardinal spent many years as a missionary in Peru and was elevated to the position of cardinal by Pope Francis in 2023.
