Japanese companies "cashing in" at the expense of Australian gas users

Australia is the world's second largest exporter of Liquefied Natural Gas, and is also the top supplier to our long-time security and economic partner Japan. On this program last week, the Federal Minister for Resources Madeline King talked about the importance of this bilateral relationship and how Australian gas exports are helping Asia's energy transition. But a new report from global energy think tank - the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis - has found Japanese companies are "cashing in" at the expense of Australian gas users. It's found Japan onsold about 600 to 800 petajoules of Australian LNG to other countries last year - which is more than Eastern Australia's annual domestic gas consumption.
