Babies could be screened for hundreds of conditions with one test

Radio National Breakfast — Separate stories podcast - A podcast by ABC listen

The number of genetic conditions newborn babies are checked for could be about to skyrocket as Australian researchers look to deliver a new, wide-ranging blood test. If you've had a baby you'll remember a midwife or nurse pricking their foot and taking a blood sample. The standard test helps early detection and treatment for dozens of conditions but researchers hope they can boost that to 600 and save even more lives.
