An Interview With Scott Hughes From Radio City

Talks With Toni - A podcast by Toni Gargan - Wednesdays

In this very special episode, Toni talks to guest Scott Hughes, a presenter on Radio City, who shares his invaluable insights on how best to create a sense of intimacy with listeners, how to sense when public speaking is working successfully, and some of the secrets and techniques that Scott has honed through his career in order to grab and hold his audience’s attention. KEY TAKEAWAYS It’s important to realise that the world is changing and evolving. Many from the last generation look with scorn upon the celebrities of today, convinced that their rise to fame has not been earned. But it’s equally as important to remember that with new advances comes new ways to engage, and we must never dismiss the new generations’ means of interacting with fame.  Radio is a one-on-one experience, designed and best utilised when the presenter creates an intimacy between themselves and the listener. They can do this by using phrases such as “I don’t know if this has happened to you...”, or “Have you ever done this...?”  Silence can be a very effective way of arresting your audience’s attention. A well-placed silence allows for an audience reaction and can strengthen the rapport between speaker and listener.  Sometimes an early laugh from your audience can disarm your critics and help to create a sense of comfort for you as a speaker.   John is a firm believer in forcing himself out of his comfort zone. Sometimes it can be constructive to agree to things before we are sure if we can do them or not. By agreeing and then working out how we’ll accomplish the task, we force ourselves to think laterally, and thereby increase our skill-set.  If you are ever overcome with nerves, keep your head up. Always look at your audience. Don’t look down at the floor, as it makes you look nervous. BEST MOMENTS “You had to be famous for doing something. Nowadays you become famous for being famous” “There is so much power in a pause” “It’s the fight or flight thing” “Fake it till you make it” “People like to watch someone who appears confident” “No one wants to see you fail - Everyone wants to see you succeed” “Follow your dreams, be confident. If a job exists, then someone has to do it” VALUABLE RESOURCES Progressive Property Radio City Presenting, Pitching And Public Speaking Podcast ABOUT THE HOSTToni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor.
