During times of great cultural crisis, humour has often been an important means of coping with (and even challenging) oppressive political regimes or social conventions. But Christians have something of a love-hate relationship to comedy. On the one hand, there's the call to not be frivolous about important things, and to be pastorally and culturally sensitive. On the other hand, there are plenty of examples in the Bible (particularly Jesus himself!) where humour is used to great effect in opposing enemies and making a polemical point or two! Yet today, Christians are often the first to take offence with each other, failing to see others with the charity and openness embedded in the Gospel. How can we avoid falling prey to a "cancel culture" mentality and embrace humour as a vital aspect of our mission to engage with the world effectively?
