Parents Can Use Tests Like Myers Briggs

Myers Briggs, Disc Assessment, and the Enneagram personality tests, are these tests worthwhile for parents? There are almost as many personality tests as there are people! But do they actually help us know who we are and why we act the way we do? Or are they a waste of time at best and even potentially harmful. This week we are talking about personality. We, as humans, love taking personality quizzes. We love discovering everything from our strengths to our values to what bred of dog we are most like (golden retreiver). It’s easy to see the allure! We’re promised that if we answer 30 simple questions, the algorithm will tell us what kind of person we are and why we do what we do. But most personality tests are pseudoscience at best, and even the best ones need to be taken with a grain of salt. So, I’ve compiled a list of 5 things to keep in mind when we take a personality test in order to get the most out of them. What you’ll learn from this episode: Difference between a characteristic and a character flaw! How Myers Briggs, DISC (and personality tests like those) get it wrong. Getting rid of the idea that there are good characteristics and bad ones. Characteristics as neither positive nor negative until we think they are. Why personality is more like a volume slider than a fixed characteristic. Over simplifying behavior overs simplifies people in a way that prevents people from getting the help they need. What key idea parents of “difficult” children are missing out on. Understanding your personality and reprogramming your brain to take maximum advantage of it, benefits both you and your family. It takes consistent support and accountability but the benefits are huge! That’s why I want you to schedule a time to talk about how I could help you.
