Happy Full House Friday Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Oh Mylanta Holy Chalupas: An Unofficial Full House Fuller House Podcast. It's that time of year again. Welcome Back To School and September. Today, I'm kicking off the Back To School Series PART 3 with Full House S3E4: Nerd For A Day, which aired on October 13, 1989. In this episode Stephanie and the rest of her class get detention for calling classmate Walter "Duck Face." Uncle Jesse says being nice to people is important and makes her call Walter to apologize. Unfortunately, Walter takes this to mean Stephanie is his girlfriend, and she suggests being his "secret girlfriend" instead of rejecting him outright and hurting his feelings. The next day when her friends come over to work on a school project, Walter shows up just before everyone else and they find him holding her hand. I enjoyed this episode just as I do all the episodes I cover. Looking back on how a viewed this episode as child vs today. what seems to a young viewer as a cute crush and puppy love that Walter has on Stephanie, I can see today how Walter's affectionate behavior could come off as forceful not at all in the lines of consent with him saying you're my girlfriend like she doesn't get a choice in the matter and him putting his arm around her and sitting uncomfortably close to her and kissing her in his mind. Also showing up unannounced to Stephanie's house and just walking in. This comes off as uber creepy. You don't just show up on someone's doorstep and walk right in, you call first and wait to be invited inside. And to think this all started when Uncle Jesse made Stephanie apologize to Walter for calling him "duckface". Apologize fine, but then Uncle Jesse instructs Stephanie to tell Walter he is a very nice boy and I think that's what set Walter off on this creepy quest for love. I like how when Stephanie is facing off against her other school friends when they start teasing her for being seen holding hands with Walter, Jesse is watching from above on the stairs. I mean yes, he probably could have intervened if it escalated to a point, but he knew that Stephanie would have to handle this situation on her own. And she did. She quickly turned the tables on the other kids making them own up to their own moments of humiliation. And see that it doesn't feel good to be teased. I feel bad that this is the final episode with Harry and they really had his character go out on a sour note. Remember Stephanie's boyfriend that she married in Season 2. This kid strolls in with two other students. He's got a new look, new clothes, and he also tossed the salad bowl haircut from Season 2 for a side part and he's got this swagger confidence that's a bit unsettling. Let's just say he comes off as a jilted ex boyfriend. He even goes so far as to say throw out "Duckface" before I walk out of your life forever" Where is this hostility coming from Harry? Good grief. Luckily he changes his ways and Stephanie invites Walter to stay and join her group on the bug project for class. I take it no one wanted him in their group. That is so sad, plus I know what that feels like. Join me next week as I cover Full House S5E7: The Volunteer for Alzheimer's Day this month, which aired October 29, 1991. In this episode DJ befriends an elderly gentleman when she volunteers at a nursing home. Have a great weekend and I'll see you next week. To EMAIL The Podcast Go To: [email protected]
