Smith. We all know Stephen A., but you may not have known he came up as a hooper, playing college ball at the HBCU school, Winston-Salem. That connection to the game carried Stephen A. through his entire career. We all know he can get his point across, but the most important thing is, he stands by what he says, and totally understands the athletes’ perspective. For Gil, it’s all about respect, and Stephen A. works to demand it and earn it. Of course he had a few things to say about Gil over the years, but now that Gil’s in another chapter beyond his playing days, it’s an entirely different conversation. On the basis of relationships, athletes and media members can actually coexist. As Gil sees it, it takes accountability and the willingness to look yourself in the mirror when putting the narrative in context.
