Music is intensely psychological. The truth is you can practice for hours and hours and feel as prepared as possible but still stumble when performance time comes. In addition, musicians (especially jazz and classical musicians) are constantly playing a comparison game with each other.
This kind of thinking can be incredibly detrimental to your performance success. The same as it's important to spend time training on our instruments and understanding music, we also need to be training our mindset. We need to program our brains to think positively, push past distractions, and learn to think about our musicianship in a different light.
Noa Kageyama is on the show today to share with us his expertise as a Julliard trained violinist, performance psychologist, and now professor at the Julliard School, on the subject of overcoming performance anxiety and quieting that inner critic we all tend to have.
