The athletes trained hard for the Olympics. 2. Medal - An award for winning or doing well. She won a gold medal in swimming. Gold 1st place Silver 2nd place Bronze 3rd place 3. Event - A competition or activity in the Olympics. The 100-meter race is a popular event. 4. Podium - The stand where winners receive their medals. She stood on the podium to receive her medal. 5. Torch - A flame carried to light the Olympic cauldron. The torch relay is a tradition before the Olympics start. 6. Relay - A race where team members take turns running. The team won the 4x100 relay race by almost one second. 7. Ceremony - A formal event, like the opening or closing of the Olympics. The opening ceremony was spectacular, but the closing ceremony was even better. 8. Record - The best performance ever recorded. (Personal, World, Olympic) She set a new world record in the 100-meter dash in Paris. 9. Qualify - To succeed in getting a place in the Olympics. He worked hard to qualify for the U.S. swim team. 10. Stadium - A large place where sports are played. The track events are held in the main stadium. The opening ceremonies were held there too. Stadiums are larger than arenas. 11. Coach - A person who trains athletes. Her coach helped her improve her technique. Technique is a special way of doing something that needs skills. 12. Competition - A contest between athletes. The competition was fierce in the finals. It wasnโ€™t a blow out. 13. Sprint - A short, fast run. He excels in the sprinting events, beating everyone he faces. โ€œLearning English is a marathon, not a sprint.โ€ 14. Diving - Jumping into water from a platform. Diving is one of the water sports in the Olympics. The Chinese often win, but the U.S. is pretty good too. Skydiving Deep Sea Diving 15. Gymnastics - A sport involving exercises and movements. Gymnastics requires great strength and flexibility. 16. Swimming - Moving through water using arms and legs. She enjoys watching the swimming events. 17. Team - A group of athletes competing together. The basketball team played very well. Team sports are different from individual sports. 18. Judges - People who score the performance. The judges gave her a high score. Two sports that have judges are diving and gymnastics. 19. Victory - Winning a competition. They celebrated their victory with their families. It felt good to win. 20. Opponent - The person or team you compete against. His opponent was very strong. 21. Uniform - The clothes athletes wear while competing. Each team has a unique uniform. 22. Training - Practicing to improve skills. She spends hours training every day. The team practices for hours every day. 23. Finals - The last part of a competition. He reached the finals of the swimming event. Medals are given out during the finals. 24. Spectator - A person who watches the event. The spectators cheered for their favorite athletes. 25.
