11 - Interview with Dr. Lawrence Afrin, Expert in Mast Cell Activation Syndrome

On this week’s episode of the Hypermobility Happy Hour (the first podcast dedicated to discussing hypermobility disorders including Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome), Dr. Bluestein and Kerry talk about mast cell activation disorders with Dr. Lawrence Afrin, a leading physician in the research, treatment, and diagnosis of mast cell activation disorders. Dr. Afrin received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1988 where he pursued a residency in internal medicine as well as clinical and research fellowships in hematology and oncology. While he was a member of the faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina from 1995 until 2014, Dr. Afrin was active in both undergraduate and graduate medical education and his practice and research focused on hematology and oncology--key areas for anyone interested in mast cells. In 2014, Dr. Afrin joined the University of Minnesota to further his study and interest in mast cell activation disorders and related issues. Dr. Afrin also has an extensive record of peer-reviewed publications and is an internationally highly sought after speaker on the topics of mast cell activation syndrome and his other areas of expertise. In 2016, Dr. Afrin published Never Bet Against Occam: Mast Cell Activation Disease and the Modern Epidemics of Chronic Illness and Medical Complexity.
