This episode myself and the How I Quit Alcohol Grads group were lucky enough to have a workshop with Psychotherapist Jeannie O'Carroll. We chat about CPTSD Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and emotional flashback which often accompany CPTSD. The difference between PTSD and CPTSDOften times a lot of people think they need to have had a big T trauma to have CPTSD, but often complex trauma is not an event that happened but rather a continually CPTSD when a child grows up in an environment where the emotional needs of a child are continually not met. When a child is not being heard, held, or attuned to by their parents or caregivers or had their feelings validated enough to feel safe and acknowledged. Jeanie talks about Flashback Flashbacks and what they look like. When we have a bigger emotional reaction than what seems warranted for the situation which can often lead to feelings of shame or guilt, or even needing to drink to cope with the situation. Jeannie refers to the work of Pete Walker and his book CPTSD from Surviving To Thriving and how we can soothe ourselves when we get into a place of emotional flashback. We also hear some shares with the group, Jeannie address parentification or role reversal with parents. We also address the 13 steps to managing an emotional flashback.
