'Om Namo Narayanaya,' known as the Ashtakshara Mantra, the 8-lettered hymn, takes the holy name of Narayana (Vishnu), the Supreme Being, and carries the meaning- 'Salutations to Lord Narayana.' According to legends, Sage Vyasa introduced it to his enlightened son Sukha as the powerful Mantra that can relieve people of their sufferings of worldly existence and help them attain the fundamental goals of righteousness, material wealth, pleasures of life, and the ultimate, blissful state of liberation. Hence, the Vaishnava tradition hails it as the Narayana Mantra or the Moola Mantra.
