Devi Mahathmyam Chapter 8: Rakthabeeja vadham

Chapter 8 of Devi Mahatmyam describes the battle between the Asuras and the Ashta Durgas and the killing of the demon Raktabija by Goddess Kali. (Apart from Chandika, the Ashta Durgas comprised the Shaktis of the various male gods). Raktabija proved difficult to kill as a new demon sprang forth from each drop of his blood that fell to the ground. But Kali eventually killed him by drinking each drop of Raktabija’s blood before it fell to the ground, and she also ate the demons who sprang from his blood. The Devi Mahatmyam comprises chapters 81-93 of the Markandeya Purana. It narrates the stories and exploits of Durga in her fight against the demons.
