The marauders prepare for Christmas separation, with Sirius reluctantly returning to his family while James and Remus head to the Potters. At Grimmauld Place, Sirius maintains contact through the two-way mirror, initially reporting that his family is being surprisingly nice and discussing "moving past their problems." However, on Christmas Eve, Sirius fails to appear for their scheduled check-in. A desperate owl from Regulus with the message "He's in trouble. Please help. R.A.B." arrives at the Potters, followed by Sirius tumbling through their floo network, unconscious and tortured by the Cruciatus curse.
