What is the Zapatista struggle about?

Founded in the 1980’s, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) rose to publicity January 1 1994, having begun an uprising in the Southern Mexican region of Chiapas. For 27 years, the Zapatistas have struggled for local horizontal autonomy and indigenous self-determination. Late this summer, a group of Mexican Zapatistas have arrived to visit Europe. A smaller party of the 160 touring Zapatistas will be arriving to Finland, to share their experience with local collectives and for each to learn from the everyday struggles of the other. The support-group for Mexican movements, Colectivo Armadillo, lays the outline on the Zapatista struggle and the upcoming tour.
